Bail for eight including Namal (update)

Court has granted bail for eight persons including MP Namal Rajapaksa who were remanded in connection with the protest held in Hambantota in violation of a Court Order.



Namal, 39 others back in court today

Arrested on charges of defying court orders and engaging in a protest in Hambantota, 39 including Namal Rajapaksa were scheduled to be produced in court today (16).

The case will be taken up at the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court.

The protest was staged on October 6 against the alleged long term lease of the Mattala Airport to India.

That was despite a court order prohibiting such protests that would inconvenience the public.

Accordingly, together with MPs Namal Rajapaksa, D.V. Chanaka, Prasanna Ranaweera and Provincial Councillors Upali Kodikara, Sampath Athukorale and Major Ajith Prasanna were also remanded.

They were arrested on charges of unlawful assembly, causing damage to public property, injuring police officers, obstructing their duty and violating a court order.
