Gnanasara Thera’s life is in danger, BBS tells president Featured

Bodu Bala Sena alleges a plot to kill its general secretary Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera by justifying the threats to his life by creating racist and religious riots by way of attacks on non-Buddhist places of worship.

BBS CEO Dilanthe Withanage has written to president Maithripala Sirisena, saying that there appeared to be some truth in information they have received that conspirators were to use underworld members or to create trouble in the night in an non-Buddhist area when the Thera would be making a visit.

Extremists are being aided locally and internationally in this conspiracy, with support coming from within the government and the opposition too, he said in the letter.

Noting that this could lead to a deterioration in the already dangerous situation for the country, he requested that the safety of the BBS general secretary be guaranteed.

He said such threats existed during the previous regime too.

If the government fails to take action and Gnanasara Thera comes to any harm, the president, prime minister and the rest of the government should take responsibility, he added.
