According to reports, the crowds thronged to the rally held at Galle Face is estimated to be between 100,000 - 110,000.
The second largest rally is said to be the UNP rally at Campbell Park, Colombo with crowds estimated to be around 65,000.
The SLFP rally held in Getambe, Kandy had drawn a crowd of Rs. 58,000 while the JVP and FSP rallies saw crowds of 24,000 and 1,000 respectively, reports further add.
However, intelligence units had been at a fix when calculating crowds at the UNP and SLFP May Day Celebrations because although large crowds had joined the processions, not all of them had attended the meetings held afterwards.
Intelligence units further state that much of the crowds who attended the SLFP procession had spent the rest of the day at the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the Temple of the Tooth.
The crowds are calculated in a 3-step process. Initially, each police station takes a count of the buses departing to each rally from their respective police division. Secondly, another team takes count of the entire number of buses passing a certain common route point passed by all buses of a certain area. Thirdly, another team makes an estimate based on the lunch packet orders made for the crowds.
