Port loses millions after boat ride of Daya's son Featured

Trade unions of the Trincomalee Ports Authority have revealed that the Pilot Boat, kept for the use of the Deputy Harbor Master to guide vessels entering the Trincomalee harbor, has met with an accident after being operated by someone other than the designated sailor.

They say that the vessel had struck a reef during this ride, causing a notable loss to the harbour.

It is said that the vessel was taking a son of retired Army Commander - General Daya Ratnayake, on a tour of the harbour when the accident had occurred and there are attempts to hush up the incident.

The high-tech vessel, named "Trinco-1", is said to be worth Rs. 160 million and is a donation by the Japanese government.

Trade unions point out that this is the only vessel in Sri Lanka with such high-tech equipment.

According to reports, several high ranking officers of the port had been present at the time of the accident.

In response to a query made by us, the Deputy Harbour Master of the Trincomalee Port - A.M.S.T. Arampath said that no attempts are made to hush up the incident.

He added that findings of an inquiry conducted on this regard have already been submitted to headquarters at Colombo Port, and any further information could be sought from the HQ.
