Court permits Gotabhaya to travel overseas

The Special High Court today (Oct 3) permitted Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to travel to Singapore for medical reasons from October 9 to 12.

The former defence secretary is accused of misappropriating state funds worth Rs 33.9 million in the construction of the D A Rajapaksa Memorial museum and had a travel ban imposed owing to the case proceedings.

A three-member judge bench hearing the case also issued orders to release the passport of Rajapaksa today.

Lawyers appearing for the accused had requested court to release the passport to prove his Sri Lankan citizenship, as he is expected to contest at the presidential election.
