Sujeewa's letter stuck with Kabir : Date fixed for UNP alliance Featured

Leaders of the United National Party (UNP) who met yesterday (17) have decided to form the proposed National Democratic Front (DNF) before the end of this month.

It has also been decided to present the name of the presidential candidate to the alliance and get it approved after the UNP has decided on the candidate.

According to internal sources of the UNP, the presidential candidate of the UNP will be decided soon.

The leaders of UNP and parties aligned Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Champika Ranawaka, Rauff Hakeem, Mano Ganeshan, Arjuna Ranatunga, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Mangala Samaraweera, Kabir Hashim and Ravi Karunanayake were present at yesterday's meeting.

The leaders of the political parties who met had also agreed on the amendments to the draft constitution to form the new front.

Accordingly, they have agreed to five basic amendments to the constitution of the new party.

The first amendment was not to establish the UNF office at UNP Sirikotha headquarters or earlier proposed Havelock Road location and locate it at an independent location.

It was also agreed to allow UNP to name the General Secretary of the new alliance.

It was also approved to include the initial members of the alliance to the leadership council. Similarly, a political party with at least one member of parliament can join the alliance and represent the leadership council.

Separate UNF organizers will be appointed to each electorate and there will be no impact on UNP organizers.

Sujeevala's letter

Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe says that a group of MPs has recently written to the Chairman of the UNP, Minister Kabir Hashim to inform the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that they are requesting to nominate the presidential candidate with the concurrence of the UNP Working Committee and Parliamentary Group.

However, it has been reported that Mr. Hashim has made several attempts to meet Wickremesinghe since last Friday (16) and he has failed due to the busy schedule of the party leader.

The letter has been handed over by the group led by Sujeewa for the nomination of Sajith Premadasa as the presidential candidate.

However, the media has reported that Premadasa has only 27 MPs supporting him and the UNP leader has the support of more MPs.

According to political critics, Premadasa cannot be the UNP's presidential candidate without the consent of the UNP leader.
