PM asks why SL hadn't signed UN's anti-terror proposal yet

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had ordered the Foreign Ministry yesterday, to give explanation as to why the UN Code of Conduct Towards Achieving a World Free of Terrorism proposal, which was approved by the UN last year, had not been signed by Sri Lanka so far.

The above proposal approved by the UN in September 2018, had been signed by the Philippines on September 28 and Thailand had signed it on October 01.

In addition, 77 countries including Egypt, Syria, Nigeria, Russia have signed the UN Code of Conduct Towards Achieving a World Free of Terrorism proposal.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had ordered that Sri Lanka sign the proposal, as soon as he had been notified of this UN proposal during his tour of Europe.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry had notified the Prime Minister last evening that during the 52 day period where Mahinda Rajapaksa had taken over as the Prime Minister in October last year, no action had been taken regarding the implementation of this proposal.

However, the Foreign Ministry had stated that once the UNP government was back in office, measures had been taken to sign this document.
