Two more field marshals? Featured

Air Marshal Roshan Gunatilake and Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, the chiefs of the Air Force and the Navy respectively during the war, are to be promoted to the rank of field marshal in recognition of their contributions to eliminate terrorism, president’s office sources say.

The president, as the commander in chief of the armed forces, has the powers to grant this rank, which were exercised to make ex-Army commander Sarath Fonseka a field marshal.

Defence secretary at the time Gotabhaya Rajapaksa declined to accept a highest Army decoration he was offered.

Karannagoda is facing a court case in which he stands accused over the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths in Colombo.
