Floods in North-100,000 affected!

The Meteorologists have predicted a reduction in the rains affecting the Northern Province over the past several days, while the affected persons so far has been calculated by the Disaster Management officials at over 100,000.

In the latest report, the DMC had stated that by Thursday evening 115,902 persons from 36,926 families had been affected by the floods in ten districts throughout the country. Among them, 114,458 persons are reportedly from the North, with 70,650 being reported from the Killinochchi district.

Two persons had lost their lives from the Jaffna and Killinochchi district. Further, livestock had been badly affected due to the floods.

According to our correspondent, in Killinochchi alone, 10,000 chickens, 300 cows, and over 400 goats have been killed in the flooding.

The meteorologists predict dry weather in most parts of the country.

However, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara district will experience rain in several areas and after 2.00 pm these areas could experience heavy showers or thunder showers.

The Home Affairs Ministry states that all measures have been made to render assistance to those affected through Divisional and District Secretaries and if anyone affected by the floods have not been given assistance they could contact the authorities on telephone hotline 1902.

The Health Ministry has set up a 24 hour emergency hotline 071 0107 107 to assist with any disease during emergency situations.
