The DMC requested to conduct a two-minute silence to remember the people who were affected and died from the tragedy, which is noted as one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

Meanwhile, a commemoration event was also held in Hatton today.
President of the Dik Oya urban council - Saden Balachandran, Hatton police officers, businessmen in the area as well as civilians of all masses attended the event.
The commemoration began at 9.25am with a minute-long silence observed. Hatton police had stopped vehicular traffic during that minute of silence.
Lamps were lit and those who lost their lives in the tragedy were remembered and prayed for.
