Founder of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) - Basil Rajapaksa and president Maithripala Sirisena have held several rounds of decisive discussions to finalise the symbol under which the Mahinda - Maithri alliance will contest the upcoming general election, internal sources say.
During discussions, they have also looked into the feasibility of contesting under the chair symbol of the United People's Alliance.
Earlier today (11), MPs of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) have flatly refused to contest under the 'Lotus Bud' of the SLPP, during a discussion held at the residence of minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
Host of SLFPers to the SLPP?
The Mahinda - Maithri alliance is currently in a crisis after a host of SLFP MPs left the party in favour of the SLPP.
Together with PM Mahinda Rajapaksa, several SLFP MPs joined the SLPP today. They included several MPs who had recently joined the Joint Opposition.
Meanwhile, it is said that many provincial councillors too, are to join the SLPP in the near future.
