He said that Basil Rajapaksa had hatched an assassination plot theory between Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe, highlighting it through the media and having made Mahinda Rajapaksa the Prime Minister, created a Constitutional crisis and paved the way for the dissolving of parliament.
Basil Rajapaksa had succeeded in convincing the Rajapaksa family and the Joint Opposition of the need to topple the government due to the expedited judicial action on the fraud and corruption cases, he said, adding that soon after Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed as the Prime Minister he had issued a notice stressing the need to go for a General election.
Mahinda’s media statement
As soon as Mahinda Rajapaksa took oaths as the Prime Minister, he issued a media statement stressing on the need to call for early elections and launching a mechanism to bring the country out of the pit it has fallen into, adding that he has the support of the political leaders and MPs who are with him.
Meanwhile, during a meeting held on October 16 at former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Wijerama residence with the Joint Opposition, the Chairman of the SLPP Prof. G.L. Peiris highlighted the need to hold an early election.
