Collection of excise duty dues affected by shortage of inspectors

The Excise Department has not deployed a mandatory excise inspector to recover the excise duty dues to the state from cigarette production for several months now, say department sources.

In their place, the Department has reportedly stationed excise guards only.

The Department is having a severe shortage of inspectors.

Deputy commissioner Kapila Kumarasinghe has told the media that they cannot deploy inspectors even at distilleries.

However, the dues are being recovered by stationing available inspectors from the nearest offices, he said.

He said permanent inspectors would be deployed after making new recruitments within the next few months.
