Kuwaiti couple imprisoned

A Kuwaiti couple who were involved in an altercation with customs officials at the Katunayake airport on July 27 over quarantining their pet dog has been sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment suspended for five years.

Negombo Chief Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya handed the sentence to Sarah Alduaij and Ibrahim Alffaih, after finding them guilty on several counts, including unruly conduct and obstructing state officials.

A fine of Rs. 9,000 too, was imposed.

Separately, the Customs fined the duo Rs. 100,000 for violating the Customs Ordinance, and asked them to pay Rs. 15,600 as quarantine charges.
