(Mirror) – Research is underway into a still unidentified paddy variety which grows up to a height of 11 feet, needs little water and can withstand dry weather.
Dr. Priyantha I. Yapa of the Faculty of agriculture at the Sabaragamuwa University is heading the study into the yet unnamed paddy variety.
It had been planted at the university premises in Belihuloya four months ago.
Now, it has grown to a height of 11 feet and already has 12 ears of paddy.
Dr. Yapa has been given 24 seeds of this paddy variety by a female farmer in Thantirimale in Anuradhapura, who had received them from another person who had reportedly found it during an archaeological excavation.
